Feet and inches calculator

Tape-measure math without the scratch paper. Add, subtract, multiply or divide feet, inches and fractions, see the answer in metric, and lay out equal spacing for panels, truss marks or booth fixtures.

Layout and spacing

Space a number of items evenly along a wall, truss or booth line. Get the gap between them and a list of marks to pull from the starting edge.

The WorkerHub app has the same feet-and-inches math in its Toolbox, next to a level, stamped job photos and a mileage tracker, and it works offline on the show floor.

How it works

Everything is turned into inches first. Feet are multiplied by 12, fractions are added on, and metric is converted at exactly 25.4 mm to the inch. The math is done on that number, then turned back into feet, inches and the nearest fraction.

Multiply and divide take a plain number for B, because a length times a length is an area, not a length. To split a 10 foot wall into 3 equal parts, pick ÷ and enter 3.

Total inches = feet × 12 + inches + fraction Decimal feet = inches ÷ 12 Millimeters = inches × 25.4 Gap (equal at ends) = (length − items × width) ÷ (items + 1) Gap (flush to ends) = (length − items × width) ÷ (items − 1)

Ways to type a measurement: 12' 3 5/8", 12'-3 5/8", 3-5/8, 147.625", 12.5', 5 ft 7 in, 3.7m, 45cm, 900mm. A number with no mark counts as inches, and a number right after feet counts as inches too.

Questions

Why is my result a little different from the exact value?

A tape reads in fractions, so the big number is rounded to the nearest 1/16, 1/8 or 1/4 inch. The decimal and metric lines show the unrounded value if you need it.

How do I find the center of a wall?

Enter the wall length as A, pick ÷ and enter 2. Or use the layout tool with 1 item and a width of 0.

How do I mark centers for drapes, signs or truss points?

Use the layout tool. Enter the run length, the number of items and the item width. The marks list shows the center of each item measured from the start. Use a width of 0 for hang points.

Can I go negative?

Yes. If you subtract a longer measurement from a shorter one the result shows with a minus sign, which tells you that you are short by that much.

Is anything I type saved?

Only in your own browser, so the form is filled in next time. Nothing is sent to WorkerHub or anyone else.
